Tips for Keeping Your Air Conditioner in Optimal Condition
Air conditioners, especially in hot climates, are an essential part of modern life but unfortunately they can be prone to problems which can be expensive and inconvenient to repair. Fortunately, there are some simple steps that you can take to prevent these issues from occurring.
1. Clean the Condenser Unit Regularly
The condenser unit is located outside of your home and contains components such as compressors, coils, fans, etc. Over time, dirt, leaves, etc. may build up on these units, reducing their efficiency and increasing risks for breakdowns. To prevent this from happening, clean them regularly using either a garden hose or pressure washer.
2. Change the Air Filter Regularly
The air filter in an air conditioning system helps remove dust, pollen, etc. from circulating through our homes. If, however, they become clogged with dirt/debris, then they will reduce airflow, making them less efficient. To avoid this problem, change them every 1-3 months depending on how often you use them.
3. Check for Leaks
Leaking refrigerant is one of the most common causes for AC problems, so if there’s any sign such as liquid near units or a hissing sound, then contact an HVAC technician immediately.
4. Keep Vents Unobstructed
Your air conditioner needs unobstructed vents to function properly, so make sure furniture isn't blocking any vents, reducing airflow and making them less efficient.
5. Schedule Regular Maintenance
Regular maintenance helps keep our AC units running smoothly, preventing costly breakdowns. Most manufacturers recommend having our units serviced at least once a year by qualified technicians who will check for leaks, clean out condensers, replace filters, check electrical components, and inspect all parts of systems.
